ACEL to Extension


The Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership (ACEL) is offering a nine-month workshop series geared specifically to Ohio State University Extension. Browse below to learn more about the Zoom-based sessions that will be offered from September 2019 through May 2020.

Please note that each session is an individual Zoom meeting and you must register in advance for each session you plan to attend.
All sessions will begin at 9:00am EST. Time-length may range 60- to 90-minutes.

Communicating to be Understood

How we communicate with each other, whether it is a co-worker or spouse, can make or break a relationship. In this workshop we will explore how people communicate differently and how you can use your strengths to build relationships with your team and increase people's feeling of being heard.

Through the workshop participants will learn their communication style and how it interacts with other styles. We will also be walking through some communication and group theory that will allow participants to identify stages of the communication process and where struggles may be happening. The goal is for participants to walk out with a strong idea of how to make communication work for them rather than against them.

Objectives:

  • Identify communication styles
  • Explore how styles interact in the communication process
  • Understand the communication process in groups and where breakdowns occur
  • Create strategies for better communication in your life

This training will provide you techniques for helping groups work through thinking and decision making of important ideas and difficult conversations. You will learn how to be effective at facilitating people through processes that provide useful information and data in making decisions and developing ownership over those decisions.

Youth Leadership and Empowerment: Creating a Culture of Engagement

Youth programs can be a space wherein youth can learn to be leaders, not only through occupying leadership positions but also by participating in meaningful community engagement activities, regardless of position. To cultivate opportunities where youth are able to learn skills and develop the self-efficacy to be engaged citizens and leaders, purposeful planning of activities is needed. Empowerment frameworks offer practitioners a way to reflect on their own perceptions of youth engagement and develop programs that can have impact on both the youth and their community.

Through the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize different youth empowerment frameworks
  • Reflect on and describe their own perceptions of youth engagement and how they have worked with youth through their programs
  • Identify activities that can be utilized in their programs to develop leadership skills and empower youth
